Pomerol – Funny Little Place, Amazing Wines!

I saw a funny little place. It’s not funny in the laugh out loud kind of sense. It’s just that it’s not really a village at all. There’s a church, a shop, and a shed load of some of the most prestigious Châteaux in the whole of Bordeaux!

Magical Merlot grows on this pretty flat plain that splits the famous village of Saint Émilion and the central town of Libourne. Gravelly and a mixture of sand and clay mean that the grapes ripen all the way through to October. But you don’t really care about that do you?

What you care about is why these wines have the label as arguably the best in Bordeaux!

The great thing, for me, is that you can drink them whenever. Sometimes wines from Bordeaux are accused of being a bit tough when they’re too young. You’ve maybe got to stick them in a cellar for a few years before they come out with their best. But not Pomerol. You can crack it open whenever and enjoy it.

There are some fantastic wine makers working these small plots. The Châteaux of Petrus, Vieux Certan, and the incredible Le Pin have been producing small quantities of the most highly sought after wine for decades.

It’s got a great satellite appellation. Lalande De Pomerol really does taste like Pomerol’s little brother, so you don’t have to break the bank every time you want to crack open a bottle. From entry level Lalande to top level Pomerol you’re looking at a €10 to €4000 a bottle swing. There’s really something for any budget and any occasion.

We’ve got a couple of great examples on sale right now at www.20h33.co.uk. La Conseillante 2010, and a Double Magnum of Château Petit Village 2009.
